Economic Assessment of Food Safety Regulations: The New Approach to Meat and Poultry Inspection AgEcon
Crutchfield, Stephen R.; Buzby, Jean C.; Roberts, Tanya; Ollinger, Michael; Lin, Chung-Tung Jordan.
USDA is now requiring all Federally inspected meat and poultry processing and slaughter plants to implement a new system called Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to reduce potentially harmful microbial pathogens in the food supply. This report finds that the benefits of the new regulations, which are the medical costs and productivity losses that are prevented when foodborne illnesses are averted, will likely exceed the costs, which include spending by firms on sanitation, temperature control, planning and training, and testing. Other, nonregulatory approaches can also improve food safety, such as providing market incentives for pathogen reduction, irradiation, and education and labeling to promote safe food handling and thorough cooking.

Effect of gamma radiation and pasteurization on the shelf-life of juçara pulp (Euterpe edulis) Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Moreira da Silva,Paula Porrelli; Prado Martin,José Guilherme; Fillet Spoto,Marta Helena.
Abstract Several studies about juçara palm fruit (Euterpe edulis) have emphasized its high antioxidant capacity. However, there is a lack of studies comparing the effects of conservation technologies on the physicochemical and sensory quality of juçara pulp. This work aimed at evaluating the effects of gamma radiation (60Co) and pasteurization process on the physicochemical and sensory quality ofjuçara pulp. The irradiated (2.5 ± 0.06 kGy) and pasteurized (80°C/5 minutes) pulps were stored at 6°C, 90% RH, for 30 days (3 periods of analysis) and were analyzed for their microbiological, physicochemical (titratable acidity, soluble solids content, color, phenolic compounds, anthocyanin content, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activity) and sensory...

Effect of ionizing radiation onVibrio bacteria in Crassostrea virginica (American oyster) ArchiMer
Eberiel, D; Dooley, K; Langton, L; Malleth, J.
The presence of Vibrio bacteria in raw shellfish poses a significant health hazard to the consuming public. These human pathogens are natural, seasonal components of the microbial flora of shellfish which can result in primary septicemic or diarrheal fatal infections. Existing shellfish depuration neither targets nor eliminates the Vibrio bacteria. For this reason, additional purification processes are necessary. In this study, the effect of low dose gamma radiation on the inactivation ofVibrio cholerae (01 and non 01) and vulnificus is investigated. Log decrement (D10) values ranging only to a high of 0.09 KGy in the Vibrio strains support the hypothesis that food irradiation technology can provide an additional effective and efficient shellfish...

Effect of ozone oxidative preconditioning in preventing early radiation-induced lung injury in rats BJMBR
Bakkal,B.H.; Gultekin,F.A.; Guven,B.; Turkcu,U.O.; Bektas,S.; Can,M..
Ionizing radiation causes its biological effects mainly through oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species. Previous studies showed that ozone oxidative preconditioning attenuated pathophysiological events mediated by reactive oxygen species. As inhalation of ozone induces lung injury, the aim of this study was to examine whether ozone oxidative preconditioning potentiates or attenuates the effects of irradiation on the lung. Rats were subjected to total body irradiation, with or without treatment with ozone oxidative preconditioning (0.72 mg/kg). Serum proinflammatory cytokine levels, oxidative damage markers, and histopathological analysis were compared at 6 and 72 h after total body irradiation. Irradiation significantly increased lung...

Effects of gamma radiation on the stability and degradation kinetics of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity during storage of (Oryza sativa L.) black rice flour BABT
Ito,Vivian Cristina; Zielinski,Acácio Antônio Ferreira; Demiate,Ivo Mottin; Spoto,Marta; Nogueira,Alessandro; Lacerda,Luiz Gustavo.
Abstract The effects of gamma radiation (0, 1, 2 and 3 kGy) were used to evaluate the stability and thermal degradation kinetics of anthocyanins, as well as the stability of total phenolic compounds (TPC) and antioxidant activity at different temperatures (4, 25, 35 and 45 °C) during the storage (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days) of black rice flour. This flour can be used as ingredient for gluten-free cereal products with higher nutritional value. For this it is necessary to preserve the anthocyanin content during thermal processing and shelf-life periods. At time 0, the dose of 3 kGy provided all of the most available bioactive compounds, raising their antioxidant potential, except for TPC. During the storage at different temperatures up to 120 days, gradual...

Estimating the demand for risk reduction from foodborne pathogens through food irradiation AgEcon
Hartl, Jochen; Fox, John A..
In this study the response of US consumers to irradiation in meat processing is examined. Despite scientific evidence of the effectiveness and safety of irradiation, meat processors and retailers have been slow to market irradiated beef products due to uncertainty about consumer acceptance. The objective of this study was therefore to examine the factors influencing consumer demand for irradiation using data from a contingent valuation (CV) survey with 819 households in eight midwestern US states. The analysis focused on the value of reduced risk from Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella in ground beef consumption. Respondents were on average willing to pay a price premium of 22 cents/lb. for safer ground beef. Willingness to Pay (WTP) amounts were...

Gamma radiation treatment applied to microbial decontamination of products derived from eggs collected from the retail market in São Paulo Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Aquino,S.; Lui,C.C.; Corrêa,B..
ABSTRACT The quality of products derived from eggs depends on the quality of the raw material source and the industrial production. The contamination by fungi and bacteria can occur after exposure of the product in the retail market. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of 60 samples of derivated egg products and evaluate the effects of gamma radiation of cobalt-60, using the dose of 5 and 10 kGy, for decontamination of products collected in the retail market in the São Paulo city. The bacterial count was performed by the most probable number (MPN) and the fungal counts by serial dilution after plating surface. It was observed a decrease in the humidity and water activity (Aw) values of irradiated whole egg powder and...

Harnessing Natural Colorants for Sustainable Textile Dyeing an Eco-Friendly Approach Using Sweet Cane (Saccharum Bengalense Retz.) Inflorescence BABT
Raza,Ali; Iqbal,Naeem; Mahmood,Saqib; Parveen,Shagufta; Azeem,Muhammad; Nawaz,Muhammad; Javed,M Tariq; Noman,Ali.
ABSTRACT The excessive industrial use of dye producing plants has threatened the existence of these species and biodiversity. Exploration of abundantly available natural dye sources not only provide industrial benefits but also share the load of dye yielding plants. In the present study we used the inflorescence of munj sweet cane (Saccharum bengalense Retz.) to extract natural colorant for textile industry. This easily available plant is cheap source of natural colorants and good alternative of synthetic dyes. The munj sweet cane inflorescence extract and fabric was treated with microwave radiations. The dyeing aspects like temperature, time, fabrics to extract ratio, salt type and salt concentrations were optimized. Pre-and post mordanting was carried...

Ionizing radiation effects on food vitamins: a review BABT
Dionísio,Ana Paula; Gomes,Renata Takassugui; Oetterer,Marília.
Ionizing radiation has been widely used in industrial processes, especially in the sterilization of medicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic products, and in food processing. Similar to other techniques of food processing, irradiation can induce certain alterations that can modify both the chemical composition and the nutritional value of foods. These changes depend on the food composition, the irradiation dose and factors such as temperature and presence or absence of oxygen in the irradiating environment. The sensitivity of vitamins to radiation is unpredictable and food vitamin losses during the irradiation are often substantial. The aim of this study was to discuss retention or loss of vitamins in several food products submitted to an irradiation process.

Ionizing radiation quarantine treatments Anais da SEB
Hallman,Guy J..
Irradiation is a viable quarantine disinfestation treatment which has been studied for 40 years although it has received very little commercial use. Two principal obstacles to commercial application, 1) the fact that insects are not killed immediately, and 2) consumer opposition to irradiation, have been allayed to some extent, but the remaining impediment to large-scale commercial use is development of approved protocols by government regulatory agencies in importing countries. The United States Department of Agriculture has taken the first step by allowing for the movement of a number of quarantined fruits from Hawaii to the rest of the country following irradiation treatment. The measures of efficacy of irradiation disinfestation treatments should be...

L'ionisation des produits de la pêche ArchiMer
Kodo, Jean-louis.
Fishes and fishery products are seafoods which have a nutritive value with a high proteins rate. Fishery products ionization has four steps: the radappertization (sterilization of the seafood), the radicidation (destruction of the pathogen germs), the radurization (food conservation and microbial flora reduction), the desinsectization (insects and parasites elimination). Fishery products quality control is very important

LncRNA HULC mediates radioresistance via autophagy in prostate cancer cells BJMBR
Chen,Changxuan; Wang,Kaizhen; Wang,Qian; Wang,Xin.
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Irradiation is one of the available options for treatment of PCa, however, approximately 10–45% of PCa are resistant to irradiation. We aimed to explore the role of long non-coding RNA highly upregulated in liver cancer (HULC) in the sensitivity of PCa cells to irradiation. Survival rate, cell apoptosis, cycle, expressions of related proteins, and caspase-3 activity were assessed to explore the effects of HULC on sensitivity of PCa cells to irradiation. Expression of HULC in DU-145, PC3, LNCaP, and RWPE-1 cells was determined and the influence of HULC on DU-145 cells was explored. Then, PC3 cells aberrantly expressing HULC were implanted into NOD-SCID mice for tumor xenograft study....
